Nils van der Poel, 25 April 1996

Nils van der Poel first appeared on the international scene in 2012 when he took part in the Youth Olympic Games. In 2014 he became World Junior Champion on 5000 m, a feat which he repeated 2015. He stopped skating during the following season, but returned to the ovals during the 2017 and 2018 seasons. He was sixth overall in the World Championships 2018 after winning the 10000 m. He then disappeared again only to reappear in Inzell in December 2020, where he set a new rink record with 12.42.80 on 10000 m. He continued the 2021 season by winning 5000 and 10000 m during the World Single Distance World Championships where the 10000 m time rendered him his first World Record. During the 2022 season he essentially won every race he took part in; two Olympic Gold Medals, World Allround Championship and all World Cup long distance races. After the season he announced his retirement from international speed skating. Will he make another come back?
