Jonny Nilsson, 9 February 1943

In Karuizawa 24 February 1963, at the age of 20, a new star was born. Jonny Nilsson was the new world champion with three fresh world records. The Swedish youngster had beaten the Norwegian quintet "Kuppern" Johannesen, Nils Aaness, Per Ivar Moe, Magne Thomassen and Fred Anton Maier, all of them with their own chapters in the speed skating history, by a fantastic 10000 meters. The 1963 WC was Nilsson's only international title except for a gold medal at the 1964 olympics. At the picture he is seen signaling his new world record at the WC at Bislett 1965. Nilsson died in 2022.
