Clas Thunberg, 5 April 1893
After Oscar
Mathisen became pro in 1916 the question arose: "Who will take over?".
Several Norwegian skaters, including the two brothers Kristian and
Harald Strøm and, in the mid twenties, Roald Larsen, tried
hard, but the one who managed best was perhaps the Finn Clas Thunberg. At the
first Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix 1924 he took 3 gold medals, one silver
and one bronze. One of his gold medals was achieved for his combined results,
which has only been awarded this once in the Olympic history. He continued with
2 more gold medals at St. Moritz 1928. Thunberg became World Champion 1923,
1925, 1928, 1929 and 1931 and European Champion 1922, 1928, 1931 and 1932.
Thunberg died in 1973.
