Before the Olympic Games 1972 no one would bet against the same skater winning all distances. Such was his fame, Ard Schenk, the at the time 29 years old Dutch speed skater. His fall on 500 meters stopped his plans of doing so, but three gold medals out of four was not a bad result. Ard Schenk has three WC-titles (1970-1972) and three EC-titles (1966, 1970 and 1972). His list of world records is the longest of all male skaters, and when he turned professional 1973 "speed skating died". It, however, came alive again ...
