Gianni Romme, 12 February 1973
Gianni Romme seems to be the one to take Dutch (and World) speedskating into the 21st century. After
proving himself to be the best long distance skater the world has ever seen, he also
finally proved to be fast enough on the shorter distances to be able to challenge the best
in the Adelskalender. During 2000 he became World Champion for the first time and during
his career he also have two Olympic gold medals. Since the World Singele Distance
Championship was started in 1996, Romme has won 7 gold medals and 2 silvers, and has during
this time dominated the longer distances. During the "Olympic Oval Final" in March 2001 he
lost, at least temporarily, his number one spot in the Adelskalendern to
Jochem Uytdehaage.
