Evert Stenlund, Eitrem

Sander Eitrem, 12 February 2002

When Sander Eitrem clocked at the World Record 5.58.52, he became the first skater to break the magic 6-minutes barrier on 5000 m. After this achievement in January 2026 at the Inzell Oval, he continued by taking the gold medal a month later at the Olympics on the same distance. He crowned his season by becoming the first Norwegian World Allround Champion since Johann Olav Koss 1994.
Before Eitrem’s world record the Frenchman Timothy Loubineaud had the record with 6.00.23 at Salt Lake City for a few months, but also skaters from other nations forged ahead. The Czech Metodej Jilek took the gold on 10000 m at the Olympic Games with Vladimir Semirunnij from Poland at his heels. This is a sign of the internationalization of the sport.
